Fifth grade marks a transition from elementary to middle school. Students begin completing written and oral reports and will receive percentage grades for their work. While rigor is higher in 5th grade, I will still provide multiple opportunities for mastery of a concept so that students feel well-prepared when they leave my classroom. I want my students to feel personal ownership in their learning and show them the merit of working hard to improve in and outside of the classroom.
How I weight my grades in 5th grade:

Course descriptionWelcome to 5th grade! This year is a big transition year during which we will practice study skills, collaboration, and habits of work that will help as students transition to middle school.
Course objectives
- Reflect Jesus Christ as we live out our faith each day
- Grow in the core subjects (math, science, reading, writing, grammar/spelling) while using and incorporating technology as much as possible.
- Develop good study skills and habits of work
Course descriptionsMATH We will be using the Eureka Math curriculum to study place value and decimal fractions, multi digit and fraction operations, addition and subtraction of fractions, multiplication and division of fractions, volume and area, and problem solving with a coordinate plane. We will also be practicing quick recall of multiplication and division facts.
SCIENCE Through inquiry and “hands-on, minds-on” investigations, we will use technology to practice the scientific process. Other topics we will explore include growth and survival, classifying organisms, human systems, earth and space, energy, and forces & motion. Our curriculum comes from Interactive Science. Starting in January, students will also begin conducting their own experiment for the Science Fair.
READING We will be reading various short stories of all genres including realistic fiction, historical fiction, fantasy, biographies, folktales, and informational articles. Using the weekly reading from Pearson Reading Street, students will rotate through centers to work with vocabulary and practice skills of comprehension, summarizing, inferring, evaluating, and critical thinking. Centers will be choice-based, fun and interactive. We will also be reading several novels as a class including Wonder, Frindle, The Sign of the Beaver, and Bud, Not Buddy. Students are expected to do at least 100 minutes of independent reading each week and fill out their weekly reading log.
WRITING/ELA - In writer’s workshop, students will become authors of narrative, expository, and opinion writing - including one persuasive essay. We will also spend time researching and writing in conjunction with the science fair. Students will learn and practice using correct grammar and punctuation in writing. Lastly, spelling will include the words most commonly expected for fifth grade students to learn - these will be practiced during writing time and assessed through weekly tests.
HISTORY - Students will be studying pre-US History through the constitution.
SPECIALS: Mr. John Horak (Minister of Music) will be teaching choir. Grand Ledge School District will once again provide us with teachers in Music, Art, Computer, and PE.
Technology in my classroom
As long as it supports student learning, I try to incorporate technology as much as possible. My students and I will use the SmartBoard, document camera, Brainpop, interactive applets and more to further teaching and learning.
*Each child will have access to a Nextbook in my classroom*
